Pogo Mobiles, SiliconDust HDHomeRun, and cabling

Posted January 10, 2015 By Landis V

Last night I finally got around to doing a little bit with the Pogo Mobile units I had installed Debian on.  Not much so far, just got dnsmasq loaded on the unit that will become my DHCP and DNS server (replacing the same functionality on my router, so the next time I swap out a router I don’t have to worry about transferring internal DNS or DHCP reservations).

Haven’t done much of anything with the unit that I will be configuring as a CA, but did run across a couple of good reads on how to do a CA “right”.  The OCSP article fills in a piece I’d like to have if I’m going to go to the trouble of setting up my own CA “for real”.

I stopped at Charter yesterday and exchanged one of my digital cable tuners for a CableCard, so I am anxious to get my HDHomeRun set up and start playing with it.  I don’t like the way my CATV cable is organized, and it’s also older RG-59.  Having purchased some RG6, I’m now in the process of centralizing that system, pulling new cable to at least a couple of locations, and will probably use the opportunity to put an ethernet drop in my garage as well.

Bucket List

Posted August 16, 2014 By Landis V

It’s difficult for me to start a specific “bucket list”, as I want to do just about everything that can be done, and see just about everything that can be seen, but I realized this afternoon that I didn’t have a central repository for these kinds of “someday” things.  So I decided to start one.

Places To See/Visit

This is a list of places I’d like to see or visit in my travels, both in the continental US and worldwide.

Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, AZ

Ran across a few pictures of this area while surfing around today.  Beautiful.

Didn’t get a chance to watch this yet, but it looks like it will be very interesting/entertaining, and I’ve got a friend I definitely need to share it with.

PVR/Live TV in XBMC

Posted April 22, 2013 By Landis V

As I use XBMC for playback of series’ I’ve recorded using Windows Media Center, and am not super fond of Media Center (it was just highly convenient), I found this to be something probably worth pursuing, or at least investigating in more detail, in the near future.

LG BD-530 Remote Control AKB73215301

Posted September 22, 2012 By Landis V

I recently took the battery out of my LG remote control to do some minor modifications to the case and lost the programming for the small set of functions that work with the TV. There’s not much on the web directly about this, and it’s pretty simple, so I thought I’d throw a quick note up here to save someone 5 minutes in the future.

Here’s a picture of the remote in question.

To program the remote, simply hold down the TV POWER button in the top right corner and press the manufacturer code button for your TV with the numerical buttons (see the table below).

LG: 1 (default), 2
Zenith:  1, 3, 4
GoldStar: 1, 2
Samsung: 6, 7
Emerson: 6
Sony:  8, 9
Hitachi:  4
Westinghouse: 6, 9 (Thanks Stacey, DB)
Magnavox:  2 (Thanks Michael)
Phillips:  12 (Thanks Benjamin)

Then release the TV POWER button to complete programming.

Westinghouse 1080p smaller size TVs

32″ – VR-3225 LD-3280
24″ – LD-2480

LD series are LED backlit. Sound appears to suck, but they otherwise seem to be not too bad.

MythTV, XBMC, misc.

Seriously, can’t Mac just use Ctl+V/Ctl+X/Ctl+C?  Thought they had a “control” key as well, in addition to the poison apple and the cloverleaf.  Guess I’ll have to check.

After a bit of a hiatus, getting back into MythTV a little bit.  This time, just going to set up backend on a PC I always have running anyway, and as noted in the second link, run XBMC as a Myth frontend.  Since I finally bought a TV from the modern era, I ordered a video card with an HDMI output and am thinking I can get an XBMC set up as a frontend so we can DVR the very small handful of shows I actually kind of give a damn about watching.

I’ve also been doing some research and playing with Joomla, as it seems like it may be a better platform for my most recent web endeavor than WordPress.  As much as I like WordPress and am relatively comfortable with it, there are some layout things that I think would take additional work in WordPress that I can just do or use a plugin for in Joomla.  I could probably make WP do what I want, but I think I’d probably have more time in that than I would in learning Joomla and implementing the plugins I need to deliver the experience I’m looking for.  Plus, without digging into the backend and really building an understanding of the platform, I’m not comfortable with my ability to build out the changes I want securely.  At layer 2 or 3 of the OSI, I have enough experience to trust my judgment, even cross platform.  At layer 7 (8?), I question myself a little more.  I’m not comfortable in situations where I can’t trust my own judgment.
