West Bend 84386 Oblong 6 Qt Slow Cooker Lid

Posted November 21, 2012 By Landis V

We recently had the lid for our West Bend model 84386 6qt crockery cooker shatter, and I am amazed at how difficult it was to locate a replacement.  Apparently the original stock has been completely wiped out and there’s nothing directly being marketed as an aftermarket replacement.  The cooker is too nice to just throw out, so we ended up doing some hunting and measuring.  I ended up ordering a “HB083 Hamilton Beach 6 Quart Crock Pot And Slow Cooker Replacement Oval GlassLid” from here (ThePartsBiz.com), which measures 12 1/4″ by 9 3/4″ and claims to fit the Hamilton Beach models 33162, 33162R, 33162RZ, 33164, 33164TC, and 33165.

Turns out, it was a pretty good fit.  Not absolutely perfect, but the rubber gasket around the rim of the new lid is pretty forgiving and doesn’t leave much of an observable gap.  It breathed new life into a cooker we  hated to lose for want of a lousy lid.  If you find yourself searching for a lid, maybe this will help you out.

Update 2016-06-28

Someone expressed concern regarding the fitment of this lid to the cooker.  I’m assuming the seller is still providing the same (or a very similar) product, but I have no affiliation with them to be able to make a definitive statement.  However, I did realize that I never posted any pictures of my cooker with this replacement lid, and thought that might be useful to someone as well.

Here are a couple of images to illustrate general fitment on the cooker, as well as a close-up of the soft rubber gasket that does a nice job closing up any gaps between the lid and

I think these could be really useful and are reasonably priced.  Sure, 10BT, but that’s plenty of bandwidth for a number of low volume devices.

LD series are LED backlit. Sound appears to suck, but they otherwise seem to be not too bad.

I bought a Mac

Posted May 7, 2012 By Landis V

I recently purchased an older iMac to get some one-on-one time with the interface, just in case I ever have a need to know or the time and focus to work on a project I have an idea for that I would like to compile natively across several environments.  It’s a bit of an odd setup, probably especially for an iMac.  I have an existing el cheapo KVM switch that I use with a Windows and a Linux box, and I have a wireless keyboard designed for Windows that’s tied into that system.  Makes the keyboard mappings just a little more interesting.

So, from time to time, I’ll be posting things tagged with “useful Mac links” providing links or information I’ve found useful/interesting/annoying as I work with the Mac, from the perspective of someone who frequently gets under the hood on other platforms, prefers the shell to a GUI, and engineers IP networks as a day job.

A couple of interesting things I’ve run across thus far.

  • ‘ls –color’ is a non-entity on Snow Leopard’s bash shell.  I miss this one quite a bit.  It was a quick and easy differentiator of regular files, executable files, directories, and compressed files.
EDIT: I discovered that ‘ls -G’ provides this functionality on Mac.
  • Windows Key + UpArrow (/DownArrow) appears to let you scroll in a Mac terminal with a Windows keyboard, and Alt + PgUp (/PgDown) appear to provide pagewise scroll, as opposed to Shift + PgUp/PgDown in Linux.

Bought one of these fellas to act as a host for my new ioSafe 2TB unit.  Will be flashing either DD-WRT or Tomato.

Might try to build something like this for storing my boat in the shed.  Then again, might actually be cheaper to just buy this and modify it than to build from scratch.
